Hyperrealistic 3D Turntables

I wanted to explore lifelike materials—such as glass and iridescent surfaces, through gradient lighting and After Effects advanced 3D.

Advanced 3D Compositions

As many native effects are not supported in advanced 3D with After Effects I had to separate out the 3D composition from the final comp with the gradients and reflective glass elements.

This left me with one comp for 3D animation and material configurations and another for adding post effects like gradient blurs/glass reflections and chromatic aberration.

RGB Separation

In order to achieve the chromatic glass effect I needed to duplicate the advanced 3D composition and add colarama’s to each of these duplicates. Each composition would act as a red, green and blue duplicate.

This allowed me to displace the colours to create an aberration effect.

Final Thoughts

This project was a good deep dive into what is possible with After Effects Advanced 3D. It was fun to experiment with various effects and 3D shapes in order to mimic an extremely reflective glass surface.

The turntable animation was used in order to showcase the different ways in which the light reflects and refracts around

different shapes.
