Loneliness - Mental Health
An emotive animation based on Mental Health Awareness Week 2022. It tackles the subject of post-pandemic loneliness and ways to combat these emotional issues.
Storyboard
I sketched initial scene ideas into my storyboard. This gave me a much stronger idea of assets to use in each scene and how the animation would transition from one scene to the next.
I knew from the start of my project I wanted to incorporate typography into specific shots. This would act as my script for the animation and provide a good amount of information without cluttering the scene with text or relying on it too much. This is mostly a 2D animation so most scenes involved static cameras.

Illustrator Assets
Illustrations were an integral element of the story I was trying to tell. I needed to spend a sufficient amount of allocated time designing effective and stylized vectors. Not only would this later save me time on reworking designs, it would serve to increase how unique the animation was. Each scene had a variety of assets that were to be animated in their own way so careful file management and clean vectors were extremely important.

Animatic
Once I was happy with my initial WIP designs I began to construct my still frames for my animatic. Although my animatic wasn’t the final product I still needed a solid set of stylized still frame designs, so I made sure to spend extra time getting each style frame to look good. This would make the animation easier for me because I would already have my mostly finalized designs for each scene. I designed all my illustrator assets so all that was left was to make changes and animate them.

3D Animation Process
The idea was to disguise these 3D models as 2D assets so that when everything was animated to fall into the “metaphysical abyss” they would match the rest of the Illustrator vectors. I cell shaded these items too as a way of creating a simplistic toon look for each model. Finally, I animated the scale, positional and rotational values of each model so that it would smoothly fall behind the bed in the middle of the shot and disappear.

For the speaker model that I downloaded, I textured it with a purple cell shader. I setup a 3D camera which would slowly zoom in on the speakers. I animated each speaker so that it bounced in a comical way. This made them feel less static and more exciting. It helped to bring the scene to life.

2D Animation Process
Animating the 2D assets involved a different set of techniques for different scenes. Some techniques and effects could be re-used throughout the animation however some scenes required specific attention such as the crowd scene.
This required rigging for the arms. The typography animation utilized position animators and swipes/bounces. All of this needed tweaking in the graph editor to get the smooth transitions I desired.
